Emergencies and conflict
People with disabilities tend to be invisible during emergency and conflict situations.
Fact90% of those killed and disabled in conflict are civilians. 80% of these are women and children. The Situation People are at risk of disability during conflict and emergency situations due to:• Injuries associated with warfare, such as amputations, burns and blindness • Mental health problems associated with trauma and violence, such as post traumatic stress disorder • Poor nutrition as a result of children being displaced from their families • Poor health as a result of a breakdown in health, water and sanitation infrastructure The impact of conflict and emergency situations is greater for people with disabilities due to: • An inability to escape quickly, for example, a person in a wheelchair may be unable to run from gunfire • Dependence on aids and carers, for example, a person with an intellectual impairment may be unable to negotiate his/her community without a carer • Difficulty adjusting to interim environments, for example, a person with a visual impairment may not be able to find where food and water are being distributed in a refugee camp • Inability to access basic health services, for example, a person with Diabetes may be unable to get the medicine they need to manage their condition What is cbm doing?cbm is working with local partners to ensure people with disabilities are included in emergency and conflict responses by: • Providing access to medical and rehabilitative services • Providing access to livelihood programs • Providing access to education and vocational training • Ensuring that new facilities are designed with disability in mind, for example, hand pumps that can be used by people with and without impairments.
