Disability and DevelopmentDisability has been largely forgotten in the work of modern development. Due to the discrimination and treatment of persons with disabilities in many developing countries the issue has bee largely excluded from mainstream disability behaviour. Often the development agencies were simply just not aware that there was an issue. Addressing the issue of disability requires specialist skills in identifying and designing development programmes that are accessible to persons with disability. With the introduction of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability there will be an increased momentum by local development agencies, governments and international non-government organisations to address the issue of disability. Successfully addressing disability in a development context will include the following: • Capacity Building • Community Based Rehabilitation • Disability and Culture • Disability and Gender • Disability and HIV • Inclusive Education • Partnership Building • Implementing the ‘Twin-Track’ Approach |
