HaitiView Haiti in a larger map Child Care and Therapy for Children with Disabilities and InjuriesThe earthquake of January 2010 left thousands of people in need of medical and rehabilitative services due to new injuries and amputations. The catastrophe also left many people who had previous disabilities without their medical support networks. This project is an emergency response focusing on children who were left with injuries and disabilities. Its aim is to set up child care centre points that provide occupational/educational/safe spaces for these children. Through these centres children also receive psychosocial and physical therapy to help them mentally process what has happened and to adjust to their new impairments. Children with epilepsy are also given their appropriate medications. cbm has been working in Haiti for over 30 years, and had several partner organisations affected by the earthquake. This project works with the staff from the Centre for Special Education - the only institution in Haiti addressing the problem of intellectual disabilities. |
