Bureau National de Lutte contre l'Onchocercose (Onchocerciasis Control)

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a total of 18 million people are at risk of Onchocerciasis. This disease, commonly known as river blindness, is, apart from cataract blindness, the major cause of blindness in DRC. In partnership with cbm, the Ministry of Health in the DRC has created a National Office for Onchocerciasis Control in Kinshasa which coordinates all onchocerciasis projects of which 8 are in partnership with cbm. These programmes which are also getting support from African Programme for Onchocerciasis (APOC) and Merck Grants.

DOCS Orthopaedic Outreach and Obstetric Fistula (VVF) Surgery

This project is located in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has an estimated population of 6 million people. It is a key project in the provision of orthopaedic rehabilitative surgery in Goma as well as outreach in other areas of the Eastern DRC. It works closely with the village communities in the identification, referral and follow-up of patients. The second component of the project is Obstetric Fistula/Vesico Vaginal Fistulae (VVF) surgery which targets women who, as a result of the persistent conflict in the area have either been victims of sexual violence or have experienced difficulties in childbirth. These women are treated through surgery and also receive counselling at the project. The project has a new 3-year component that aims to increase awareness on HIV/AIDS, thereby reducing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in three territories of the North Kivu province (Masisi, Rutshuru and Lubero) and the town of Goma. Special emphasis is placed on people with disabilities whose special communication needs are frequently ignored in awareness campaigns.
