Rodenson's StoryRodenson's Story
Heroic Courage to Save His SisterRodenson, an eight year old boy, and his family were at home when the earthquake hit. They were escaping their two storey home when Rodenson noticed his three year old sister Muriel wasn’t with them. He went back into the house to find her.He grabbed her and started running out when the house caved in, but part of it fell on his foot. Muriel was able to keep running to safety.
Rodenson had saved her life. His mother immediately went to the hospital but they were so overwhelmed with the number of earthquake patients they weren’t able to treat him.
It was three days before an aid worker found Rodenson and got him medical care but by then his foot was gangrenous and had to be amputated.
Rodenson knows he saved his sister’s life. He knows he did a wonderful thing. But that doesn’t make it easier for a football playing boy to lose his foot.
cbm’s child centre allows injured children like Rodenson to ‘just be kids’ for a few hours of the day. They play, they sing, they draw - and they receive medical care and physiotherapy.
cbm is currently organising a prosthesis for Rodenson so he will be able to be fully active again before too long.
