World Congress Braille21

A girl reading Braille in a school in Ethiopia

cbm is a partner of 'World Congress Braille21', an international congress about Braille where its innovative potential in the 21st century will be discussed by people from all over the world.

'Innovations in Braille in the 21st Century'

Braille21Braille21 is hosted by the German Central Library for the Blind in Leipzig (DZB Leipzig), and will take place from 27th to 30th of September 2011.

cbm (a member of the World Blind Union) is a partner of the congress, the patron is German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the theme of the Braille21 is 'Braille and its chances and challenges today and in the future'.

There will be a platform where people from all over the world will deal with the innovation potential of Braille in the 21st century.

Participants, projects and focus

More than 500 participants are expected, so new projects will emerge, initiatives will be started and synergies will be generated that will give fresh impulses to Braille for the coming years.

Altogether, six focus themes are fixed – one for each dot of the Braille system:

1.  Education and literacy
2.  Vocational training, employment and lifelong learning
3.  Research and development
4.  Improving access to information
5.  Braille as a part of Universal Design
6.  The role of Braille in enabling independent living
