Darren Ward, National Director of cbm New Zealand gives interview on Rhema radio

16 July 2010

The people cbm works with are excluded from normal activities of the community because of their disabilities.  cbm is working to change this.  National Director Darren Ward discussed the issue of disabilities and poverty in the developing world context today on Rhema's One 2 One mid-morning talk show with Peter Sharp.  Rhema is currently highlighting the work Christian charities do overseas with their 'Mission Month'.

National Director Darren Ward has just returned from a village outside of Manila in the Philippines where he met a woman in her 40's who had never received an education, but through a cbm project she has received the first formal training in therapeutic massage so she can make a living.  Cultural misunderstanding or prejudice, many people think that to have a disability is a consequence of past wrongdoing or is a curse.  Many people are ashamed because they have a disability and hide away from the community but this doesn't have to be the case.  Resources in most developing countries are limited and there is no social welfare system to fall back on.  cbm is working to change this.
