Pipeline explosion - cbm assists partner
Persons with Disabilities affected On 12th September 2011, more than 80 people died and a hundred more injured at Sinai Lunga Lunga area in Nairobi, due to a fierce pipeline explosion according to Kenyan media reports. The explosion was caused by fuel leaking into the slum sewers and into a river that runs through the slum. Residents were trying to fetch the fuel when the explosion happened. Hundreds of families have lost their homes and property and are now forcefully displaced. 17 of the families affected are clients from our partner organisation APDK (Association of the Physically Disabled of Kenya) which works with a total of 24 families in the Sinai slum. The clients lost their homes and property to the inferno. There are three families that our partner couldn’t reach and are still unaccounted for. Many of the clients are now sheltered at the Tom Mboya County Hall and some hosted by friends elsewhere. A four year old child with cerebral palsy was among those who lost their lives during the fire. Her mother, who had stepped out to look for food for her family, left the child sleeping peacefully unsuspecting the explosion would claim her daughter and all her property. Despite losing his property, one man - Ngana - was more relieved than distraught that his 11 year old daughter Barbara who has cerebral palsy was alive and well. The thought of his daughter caught in the fire was unbearable as there was great stampede at the slum during the explosion and she could have been trampled on. “I give God all the glory that Barbara was in school when the fire happened,” he said. His family is among the 17 that lost their property. cbm responds Through APDK, cbm is looking into facilitating recovery of the 17 families that lost their properties. According to Nat Bascom, cbm Country coordinator Kenya, “cbm is responding to the pipeline fire to assist these 17 families who have children with disabilities and lost their homes / property in the fire. cbm with its local partner will provide a house set up package and four months of support for other rental premise as they families get back on their feet. cbm is also anticipating additional requests for rehabilitation services from those burn victims from the area post reconstructive surgery.” Our prayer is that the three unaccounted for families will soon be found safe and well and we thank God that four families and their homes were unscathed by the fire.
