Emergency Mobility Appeal![]() Above photo from Reuters Dear cbm Supporters, Getting through the day in squelching mud and waist-high flood water is hard enough for the able-bodied. For persons with disabilities, it is a nightmare. Imagine having the familiarity of your home, your neighbour’s house and the path in front of your house completely washed away. Now imagine that scenario as a person with blindness. Everything below your feet is new; uncertainty dominates your every move as you listen for instructions of where to go. You feel the water rising on your feet, your walking stick is in the house…but it’s too late to get it now. Or maybe you can see the waters rising; feel the cold water on your legs. The world is silent. People are gathering their belongings and running but you don’t know what they are saying… where they are going…what if you’re separated from your family? For people with hearing impairments, having this vital information communicated to you will save your life. Now imagine if you could see and hear the water coming but you were unable to move or do anything about it because you had a physical impairment. With the Lord’s grace, thousands of people with disabilities survived this flood but most have lost the tools of their mobility. cbm is writing you today with this Emergency Mobility Appeal, in hopes of replacing these life-saving devices. Our partner in Pakistan has done an assessment on the status of persons with disabilities in the relief camps and has identified the urgent need for: • 5000 wheelchairs so people with physical disabilities can reach key food distribution points and are not left on the ground waiting for their family to return with food • 4000 white canes so the blind can manoeuvre around new, unfamiliar landscapes • 1000 mobile communication devices for the deaf so they can communicate by sending messages Will you please help cbm give them the best possible chance at survival. • $15 could provide a white walking cane to one person • $50 could help provide a mobile communication device for the hearing impaired. • $75 could replace white canes for five people. • $350 could replace a wheelchair for one person. cbm has been working in Pakistan for over 30 years with Christian organisations that do not discriminate their services for people with disabilities based on nationality, sex, or religion. We support 19 projects across the country, mostly in work with the visually impaired. cbm New Zealand supports the only optical workshop in the country. Some projects we have heard from but from others we are still awaiting news. Please pray for them.
