Netball elite unite to bring light to worldLead by international netballer, Magic defender and cbm ambassador Leana de Bruin, members of both teams helped light 5000 candles to launch the 5000 Miracles charitable appeal to fund 5000 sight operations for the world’s poorest children and adults. The 5000 candles event was held at Trusts Stadium in Waitakere City, the venue of the Magic vs Northern Mystics game the next day. Announcing the 5000 Miracles appeal, cbm National Director Darren Ward says the netballers’ symbolic gesture represents cbm New Zealand’s goal of giving 5000 cataract and other sight-saving operations to very poor children and adults. “Without sight, these people are condemned to a life of destitution, suffering and exploitation. As little as $35 can provide someone the gift of sight” “Most of us take our sight for granted, yet for the poorest of the poor sight can make the difference between life and an early death,” she says. de Bruin commented that every dollar counted in the appeal and New Zealanders were encouraged to celebrate their own sight by making a donation.
