International Noise Awareness Day

Communities Urged to "Protect Their Hearing, Protect Their Health" on International Noise Awareness Day, Wednesday, April 28, 2010
The Center for Hearing and Communication founded International Noise Awareness Day to promote awareness of the dangers of long-term exposure to noise.  Join CBM and professional organisations, community activists and individuals around the world in celebrating the 15th Annual International Noise Awareness Day on April 28, 2010.
Continuous exposure to noise above 85 decibels can be harmful to hearing and documented research has found noise does not have to be that loud to lead to physiological changes in blood pressure, sleep, digestion and other stress-related disorders. Studies exist documenting the harmful effects of noise on children's learning and behavior.
Noise poses a serious threat to our children's hearing, health, learning and behaviour. Recent research suggests that quiet promotes an environment which will foster learning, as well as the opportunity for parents and children to enjoy each other's company. Parents must analyze their own home and recreational activities and make every effort to include quiet times with their children, reading, talking around the dinner table and listening to their children.
"It is time to address the threat that noise poses to hearing, health, learning and behavior," says Amy Boyle, Director of Public Education at the Center for the Hard of Hearing. This year the Center is once again spearheading a special effort to inform the public of the necessity of creating a quiet home, school and recreational environment.
The Center for Hearing and Communication sponsors International Noise Awareness Day every April, in conjunction with professional organisations, community activists and individuals around the world. Each year, professional organisations and community groups play an important role in this campaign by providing free hearing screenings, disseminating information and hearing protection, and helping to promote the importance of reducing noise in our lives.
"It is time" Boyle says, "that we take responsibility to quiet our surroundings and create a healthy environment for us and our children."
April 28, 2010 will mark the 15th Annual International Noise Awareness Day.
