One Year Anniversary of Haiti Earthquake

P1080830_1.JPGOne Year Anniversary of Haiti Earthquake

A year ago, a small island country in the Caribbean was devastated by an earthquake.  I don't think any of us will forget that day, and the images that poured through the media.

An estimated 300,000 people sustained injuries that could lead to a disabilities, and over 1 million people made homeless.

cbm took part in the international response to help those affected, focusing on the needs of people with disability, and with newly acquired debilitating injuries.  Our international expertise in dealing with disability and poverty situations, combined with 30 years experience working in Haiti, meant that we were well poised to help our partner organisations rebuild lives.

New Zealand donations from our supporters were supplemented by funding from the New Zealand Aid Programme, and both went to the establishment of Child Care Centres for Children with Disabilities and Injuries.  These were safe places for children to play, receive an informal education, and to recover from physical and mental traumas they experienced from the earthquake.

Hundreds of children and their families have been assisted through these unique safe havens that provided medical care and rehabilitation.

We invite you to
re-visit Rodenson, a young boy who participated in the New Zealand supported Child Care Centres, and see his progress a year on.

As public schools re-open, the child care centre phase has wrapped up.  These Child Care Centres were a piece of cbm's total, and ongoing work in Haiti.

cbm was in Haiti before the quake, is there now in strength, and is committed to being in Haiti in the future.

As you
watch the video below and read the cbm one year report, you will gain insight into cbm's other work in Haiti.  In addition to Child Care Centres, cbm as an international organisation has achieved the following:

  • 73,000 earthquake survivors helped
  • 126,000 medical treatments supported or provided
  • 25 international staff sent to Haiti to assist survivors with new and pre-existing disabilities
  • 48 Haitian nationals hired to support the relief/recovery efforts.

cbm has distributed or supported:
  • 300 tarps
  • 260 mattresses
  • 50 tents

Thank you for all your support and prayers.  We will continue to do more.

Yours in Gods Service,

Darren Ward
