Haiti Project Update - Child Centres

Child Centres for Children with Disabilities and Injuries

The earthquake in Haiti lasted only seconds but will be felt for a lifetime. It left close to a quarter million people dead, but even more injured. Half of the 300,000 injured were children, many left with a newly acquired disability or injury that would require ongoing care.

With your support, cbm answered their calls for help.

Within 48 hours cbm had expert staff on the ground in Haiti helping our local partners and other medical staff at overwhelmed hospitals, and assisting with food and water distribution.

After assessing the situation from within Haiti, cbm developed a plan. As part of the plan, we are happy to announce there are now several Child Centres for Children with Disabilities and Injuries in Port au Prince, and more are on their way.

These are safe places for children to ‘just be kids’ and receive the on-going medical care they desperately need.

cbm supporters have generously responded to ouremergency appeal for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

To date, $150,000 has been donated by people such as yourself - and it continues to come in. cbm was also able to have $70,000 of you donations matched by the New Zealand Government, making your money go further.

Thank you. You made a difference.

When the world came toppling down around the children of Haiti, we were there. Your love and generosity has been felt from across the world and has given them the hand of hope that they desperately needed

The Child Centres for Children with Disabilities and Injuries are safe areas for children to play, receive an informal education, and most importantly to recover from physical and mental trauma they experienced during the earthquake.

They are an access point for children with disabilities and injuries to receive quality physical therapy and rehabilitative care, and to talk about their fears and angers arising from the tragedy they witnessed.

We are taking care of their physical and mental wellbeing. cbm has flown in a team of disability specialists to provide medical expertise for the project.

cbm has been working around the clock with other like-minded agencies to ensure that children with disabilities are not left out of recovery efforts, such as the World Health Organisation and the United Nations. In January, cbm’s efforts in Haiti were recognised by UN Enable, the United Nations Department for Disabilities.
