A Disability & Inclusive Development Workshop was organised for half a day on October 14th, 2011 for European Union (EU) delegation Thailand at EU office in Bangkok, Thailand. After this small workshop, cbm Bangkok was invited to repeat the session for more EU staff members and also EU funded projects.

Introduction

The training was offered to the European Union (EU) delegation Thailand as part of advocacy strategy with expectation to mainstream disability inclusion into practice and to raise cbm visibility with the EU delegation Thailand.

The training was facilitated by Sirin Atsilarat, Capacity Development Officer – Disability Inclusive Development and Advocacy from
cbm Central East Asia Regional Office and Natagamon Roongtim, from Bangkok Independent Living Centre Director.

Key content

The training content focused on:
 
  •     Appropriate understanding of disability in accordance with UNCRPD,
  •     Common barriers persons with disabilities encounter,
  •     Familiarity with UNCRPD, MDGs and key EU policies on disability including “Make Development Inclusive Practical Guidebook”,
  •     Making suggestions on how to break down the barriers/exclusion of persons with disabilities through project cycle management.

Before we closed the workshop, we asked the three participants to write in a piece of papers list of realistic things they will do more or differently to promote disability inclusion in their work. These notes will be post back to them end of January 2012 to remind them.


  •     Review EU funded projects to see possibility to for disability inclusion at this stage as many of projects are now in their mid-term phase. (Arunsiri Phothong, Programme officer, Social Sectors)
  •     Different projects will probably be able to accommodate disability inclusion at different levels. (Arunsiri Phothong, Programme officer, Social Sectors)
  •     Analyse ongoing projects and in the pipeline projects how could I include persons with disabilities as one group of stakeholders. (Suparat Udonkiattikul, Programme officer, Trade and Investment Sector)
  •     Communicate to colleagues and friends to change their attitudes to include persons with disabilities into our activities. (Suparat Udonkiattikul, Programme officer, Trade and Investment Sector)
  •     Liaise with concerned stakeholders and working groups on persons with disabilities. (Silvia Facchinello, Attache (Co-operation), Programme Officer for Myanmar - Disability contact person)
  •     Advocate among EU colleagues the inclusion of persons with disability in their technical areas of work. (Silvia Facchinello, Attache (Co-operation), Programme Officer for Myanmar - Disability contact person)
