Many topics were covered, including practical ways to create a more inclusive environment for persons with disability and the needs of programmatic staff and how they could practice and promote inclusion in their work. Participants felt that the training was very worthwhile, and more will be planned in the future.

Disability & Inclusive Development (D&ID) Training held in June 20 & 21, 2011 was participated by staff of cbm’s Indonesia Country Office. The first day was focused on practical ways of creating a more welcoming inclusive environment for persons with disability. The second day was tailored more on the needs of programmatic staff and how they could practice and promote inclusion in their work.
Role plays were used to demonstrate the barriers faced by many persons with disability as well as the importance of environment that are accessible to all, not only in terms of the physical environment but also in communication and attitudes.
A simulation exercise showed what can happen in development programmes if the needs and rights of the most vulnerable persons in communities are not taken into account. This activity highlighted the importance of including persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups in the planning, implementation and monitoring of development activities.

On the second day, some of the key topics addressed were
the history of disability and development in Indonesia
the legal framework regarding disability in Indonesia
the human rights based approach to development
Although the participants felt that much more sharing and learning would be needed in the future, the training was definitely a step in the right direction.
