Ruth's story

Ruth_Zambia.JPGRuth lives in Zambia. She was born with filmy cataracts in each eye. It took her parents a long time to discover Ruth was blind. In New Zealand we'd have noticed a toddler struggling to see her toys and books. Ruth didn't have any of those. It's surprisingly hard to spot blindness when a family has nothing to call their own.

The government hospital sent Ruth's desperate parents away with nothing more than a bottle of eye drops. Ruth needed two cataract operations… but even one was far too expensive for the family. They'd have paid all they had, but they had nothing to spare.

Ruth grew up unable to read or write, make friends or find her way around. Ruth was a lonely, lost girl.

Then one day she really did become lost, losing her way while fetching water. Terrifying hours later, neighbours found her and brought her home. Her parents knew they needed a miracle.

Ruth_Zambia_with_friends.JPGcbm’s partners field workers found Ruth and gave her the two operations she needed.

Now Ruth can see! She can dance. She can jump. She can make friends, and learn to read and write.

Nine years of waiting in hazy darkness. That's too long, isn't it?
