Marriapan's story

Mariappan_is_very_hapy_he_can_see.JPG"Because of my sight," said Mariappan, "other children don't want to play with me." Life in a slum for outcasts is hard enough, with a family of six living in a shack the size of a bedroom. But Mariappan's life has been much harder still.

His mother had chickenpox while pregnant, so Mariappan was born with cataracts in both his eyes. His loss of eyesight has badly affected his ability to learn and play with other children.

Like any boy, Mariappan has dreams. "To be a policeman and to play football." His greatest dream of all, though: a miracle cataract operation. "I hope one day I can see properly."
