Mahabishna's story

Mahabishna_in_hospital.JPGMahabishna is 2 years old and blind from cataracts. Her young parents despair for her future, because in their Muslim community girls with a disability are not valued very highly. They believe she will not get the chance to go to school, or to get married. In their culture this is a major concern even at this young age.

Her parents share their house with 10 other people – all supported by Mahabishna’s fathers small wage of approximately $1.30 per day. Paying for surgery simply is not an option.

Mahabishna’s head is shaved, partly for ease of care and partly for safety. But it adds to the stigma of blindness. In India, a female’s long hair is a mark of beauty. Because she can’t see, Mahabishna sometimes goes too near the fire. She already has one burn on her head.

A 20 minute operation will restore Mahabishna’s sight and provide her parents with the hope of fulfilling their dreams for her, an education and marriage.
