Baby Nana's story

Baby_in_Africa_with_Cataract.jpgNana was born in one of the poorest villages in one of the world's poorest countries, Niger. Being the poorest of the poor is hard enough, but Nana's lot in life was even worse. She was born completely blind. Her sight was blocked by two filmy barriers, called cataracts.

As her eyes wandered sightlessly, searching for her mother's face, her family didn’t realise Nana was in a race against time. If her cataracts were removed in her first three months, her sight would be perfect. If not, Nana's brain would gradually lose its ability to "understand" eyesight. In Niger, life without sight would be an endless struggle to survive.

Fortunately a cbm mobile eye clinic reached her remote village in time. Thanks to the generosity of someone like you, Nana has received the operation she needed and her precious eyesight has been restored. “She will be able to see me,” said her delighted mother. “I can send Nana to school.”
