Models of Outreach Ministry
Reaching out to your neighbours Models of Outreach MinistryThere are many ways to reach out in friendship, with practical expressions of care and support. Here are a few simple ways: Friendships and Social Relationships Connecting with each other throughout the week: “I’ve found that when someone first meets a person with a disability, they’re scared to say anything because they’re frightened that they will not be understood. What they need to do is step out in faith and make the first contact. This is how to build a relationship.” Throughout the Luke14 program there has been encouragement to start small, with the needs of one. The key is to start – to make a commitment to friendship and act upon it. Disability Homeshare Reach out to people with a disability in your local community through a Disability Home-share program. Respite Care Respite is a number one need for families of children with a disability. Churches can provide invaluable support to local families by providing a regular respite service for parents. There are many options. Organise cbm or your local respite provider to run a workshop for you to explore these. Circles of Support A Circle of Support is a group of people who meet together regularly to help a person or a family accomplish his or her personal goals in life, which cannot be achieved independently. There are people in every community isolated by disability, who need the support and advocacy that such a group can supply.
Become a host family for a child with a disability Hundreds of families are on waiting lists of respite providers for a host family to support them in their caring role.
Community Friendship Walk Organise a regular walk along a rail trail or walking track in your neighbourhood, in partnership with a local disability service provider, or your local gym or Neighbourhood House, and ensure your invitation is open to all in your community
Support your local Special Development School Two times of increased stress for parents of children with a disability are around school entry and school leaving. Seek to provide support at these times, for example, by hosting special morning teas or providing respite so parents can take time to plan.
