Links with local disability agencies are made. The outreach of the church becomes accessible to people with a disability.

Learn about different models of disability outreach ministry here.

There are many both ordinary and creative ways that churches can reach out to people with a disability and their families in their community.

  • Congregations want to be responsive to community needs, but lack direction;
  • Disability service providers want to engage the wider community and encourage inclusive practice, but often lack the natural partnerships with local community members to do so;
  • People with a disability and families can hold out great hopes that their church will assist and care for them, but don’t always know how to invite their involvement and ask for their support.

There are over 4,000 churches in New Zealand, with potential to support some aspect of the life of a person with a disability or family.

Imagine if even a fraction of these congregations took steps to reach out to and engage their neighbours with disability.

The impact would be enormous.
