Reaching in to your midst

Disability Awareness Sunday

One in five New Zealanders has a disability, but this is not the ratio we find in our churches.

To compliment the Church Bar None six-week Bible study is a guide on planning a Disability Awareness Sunday for your church.

A Disability Awareness Sunday event can help develop your capacity to welcome and include people with a disability in all aspects of your church’s life together.

Disability Sunday events can be a segment of your Sunday service, or a whole service or series of Sundays.

Read the testimonials from events held in Australia, and see for yourself how acceptance into church life can have such an impact on people with disabilities.

"I glanced down the row to see my wife deeply worshipping God, tears streaming down her cheeks. And I knew why. It was because we were worshipping together for the first time as a family for years. My 14 year old severely disabled son was with us, yelling out in excitement at the top of his voice, but it didn’t matter."

"We were in a place of acceptance, a place of love, a place where disability and difference were embraced, not treated with embarrassment. We didn’t feel like we were the odd ones out."

"We were all a legitimate part of God’s body, including our son, and many other people with a disability. Our son wasn’t just being tolerated, but welcomed. He wasn’t being stared at, or avoided, or pitied; he was being talked to, sat with and respected, as a 14 year old should be."
