Meet Vincent
In his few short years, Vincent has faced greater hardship than most adults will ever bear. Yet at last Vincent has good news in his life. He was blind, but now he can see!
First came the death of Vincent’s parents. Then utter poverty in a makeshift family of young relatives. When we found them, they had gone without sugar or salt for a year. No eggs for five months. Never any milk to drink. They had no goat, no cow, not even a chicken, so it had been months since their last taste of animal protein. They all had sore eyes and were very sensitive to the light. This is Vitamin A depletion, which can lead to permanent blindness. Vincent, though, was already blind from cataracts. But now, Vincent has received a modern miracle: a cataract operation. He can see again! However, the longer a child is blind, the harder it is to restore sight. Vincent’s sight will never be perfect. He needs glasses and will probably require an extra visual aid for reading the blackboard at school. Of course, his family can afford neither.
